Yes, That Too

Neurotypical privilege is your viewpoint onto psychology being considered neutral and unbiased.

I’m doing a psychology degree. I’ve quickly learned that when neurotypical people study psychology - either that of NT people, or that of neurodivergent people - they are considered neutral and unbiased observers, no matter what. Even if their research clearly has an agenda behind it e.g. peddling a particular drug or treatment.

However, whenever a neurodivergent person conducts a study into their own neurodiversity, the lecturer states that their research is or may be “biased by their personal perspectives”.

In my first week, I had a lecturer tell me to my face that my opinions on autism and autism treatment were biased because I’m Autistic. I’ve never seen anyone tell a neurotypical person that their opinions on neurotypicality are biased by their NT status.

Aren’t the people who have nothing at stake besides their own career reputations the ones who hold the most potentially dangerous bias?  They’re the ones who can play patients like pawns.

When people accuse you of being biased for having autism - they are, subconsciously, acknowledging their privileged status. Yet, they choose to be assholes about it. They realize that the autistic people are the ones whose lives are at stake, and they choose to rub that fact in.

Of course, the same thing also comes up in discussions of reproductive rights. The pro-life non-uterus-owners feel that the pro-choice uterus-owners are biased because, well, it’s the latter that would be affected by reproductive laws. Figures!

Clearly, feministrocker knows what’s up.
