Women of color are told they’re undesirable, or that their only redeeming traits are their ass, thighs, curves, or breasts, because the standards for beauty have set by white misogynists who dehumanize and festishize WOC. They’ll tell you to put these harmful chemicals on your skin and take your dollar, but they won’t take your ass.

The fact that skin lightening products are sold means that there is a demand for people who want lighter skin because they have been rejected and condemned for their bodies.

I realised today why I don’t like Bloodhound as much as I like Terrier.

For one, I really liked seeing Clary and Tunstall interact in Terrier. And I loved watching the other puppies. But mostly, it was Okha, and how she, yes, she, I’m going there, is handled.

Okha’s pronouns bothered me too… But I chalked it up to the fact that Okha didn’t have time to correct Beka and Beka was a bit ignorant.

Is your latte too hot? Mine was this morning. I was at the bustling Oasis shopping center in Kampala, Uganda, and I took one sip and then spilt it all over me. You know who else has these problems? The local Ugandans that frequent this shop, and make up the majority of it’s clientele.

As Africa stabilizes across the continent, Westerners forget that average daily problems in Europe or North America are not that far off from that of the African middle class. Our smart phones sometimes freeze up. That’s annoying. The DJ is playing shit, so we leave the club.

Which is not to say that there aren’t problems. It’s not to pretend that all of Kampala or Nairobi or Kigali is a paradise of African wealth where the biggest problem is a warm beer. There is real, stark, damaging poverty here. But there is similar poverty in Clichy Sous Bois in Paris. There is similar poverty in Brooklyn. In Chicago. The outskirts of Amsterdam.

The idea that an African can’t have similar issues to those living in London is a mistake. It is a mistake rooted in the idea that Europe is somehow superior or has vast amounts of wealth. In reality, the East African GDP has been steadily on the rise for years, whereas the economic outlook in both North America and Europe have been steadily declining. Angola just gave a loan to their former colonialists, Portugal. Our cities now have thumping clubs, eclectic cuisine and most of these places are owned and invested in by locals.

Stop feeling bad for Africa. It doesn’t need your pity.

If you want to do something to help those who survive on very little, try investing in it. Instead of buying Tom’s shoes which give away free shoes (and therefore remove jobs from hardworking Africans making shoes) invest in Sole Rebels. A woman-owned Ethiopian based shoe company that pays their workers a livable wage.

Tonight I am going with Ugandan friends and some expats to watch the Poland vs. England match, live on DSTV at my local pub. I will eat grilled tilapia and drink some beer. This is not an extraordinary life here. This is the new Kampala average. This continent is far from perfect. Uganda is far from perfect. But it is getting there, and if you think for one minute Africans do not experience massages, cupcake shops, foam on our coffee, car trouble, banking woes and hangovers after too much fun, you are dead wrong.

It’s not all flies on babies. Welcome to the real Africa.

Hi everyone,

I’m getting over my shame and internalized ableism and asking for help. I’m a chronically ill unemployed trans gurl who just left sex work (as in, yesterday) because I finally lost my shit. I’m also moving out of my abusive household in June, around the 15th or so. I don’t have a place to stay yet so the more money I have saved up, the more likely someone is going to trust me to move in with them.

Thanks to sex work and friends donating, I’ve saved up $2,000 for deposits, first/last month’s rent, housing applications, etc. I’m trying to raise another $2,000 to get me through the summer. Starting September/October, I should be receiving financial aid from my university, so that will help.

To give you an idea of where the money is going:
- Rent for a shared room is $500-$550/month
- Utilities are anywhere between $20-$60/month
- I’m limiting myself to $100-$125/month for food
- Gas is $40 a full tank, so about a $80/month if I do this right

I’ll also be looking for a job at this time. I have an open interview tomorrow so hopefully I’ll get called for a second interview!

Important to note! My memoir, Trauma Queen, is aiming to be published on May 31st, 2013. It’s going to cost $20, so if you want to hold off donating to buy the book, that’s totally understandable. I have a collection of writing and art here (x) that you can read/watch, and a zine here (x). They are asking people to buy tickets even if they’re not going, to help ensure the festival continues in later years. Attendance is way down. In the same email they pretty openly acknowledge that the attendance issues are a result of the “very public struggle about the Festival’s intention to create self-defined space for WBW [note - that’s “womyn born womyn” - their messed-up term for cis women].”

OK MWMF defenders, let me explain something to you.

If attendance is way down as a result of your decision not to include all women at your fair, it’s not because trans women are forcibly preventing people from going. They can’t actually do that.

It’s because thousands of the people who you WANT to attend - myself included - are completely uninterested in being part of a “self-defined space for WBW.”

Is our lack of interest a result of the fact that trans women are calling attention to how messed up it is that you’re excluding them, and pointing out to us that attending your festival is tantamount to endorsing transphobia? Absolutely.

But cis women who are avoiding your festival aren’t doing so because we’re scared of disapproval. We’re doing it because we value our relationships with trans women, and with our fellow friends of trans women, far more than we value spending hundreds of dollars and traveling across the country just so we can hang out with people who have some sort of problem with trans women.

So please stop saying that poor attendance at your festival is part of some sort of attack on women’s right to “self-define” our spaces. It’s actually the RESULT of our right to self-define our own spaces. “People should be able to decide who they want to associate with” is not the same as “a particular organization should be able to put on a huge, public, event and expect a large attendance and commercial success despite irreparably pissing off a whole lot of people, including many of the people in its target demographic.”

It’s sad because I know that the space was great for some women, but I’m actually really glad that so many women are voting with their feet on this. I’m glad that fewer and fewer women are able to bring themselves to support trans-exclusive spaces and would be really happy if MWMF stopped existing altogether and made way for a new space that was actually inclusive. I might actually go.

A lot of autistics that went undiagnosed for a long time are so grateful to have avoided “therapy” and ABA as kids. They’re higher-functioning and happier and more well-adjusted as adults for flying under the radar. Earlier diagnosis is only good if the way you treat autistics is better for autistics than the way you treat allistics.

Yeah I just almost died because of ableism but I’m just over sensitive yeah.
Then there’s the lung damage I have, because of ableism.
And the fact I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve almost died because of ableism. Lost count.
And I’ve been locked up because of ableism.
And I’ve been beaten up because of ableism.
And I’ve been treated like I don’t even exist because of ableism.
I’m disabled (in many different ways), lesbian, poor, nongendered, and fat. I’ve experienced oppression for all of these things. And while it’s hard to tease apart what is what? Ableism has been the worst. By far. Different people experiencing several forms of oppression will have different answers as to which has been worst for them and some can’t answer at all, but for me ableism has been the worst, and that means it’s definitely real because the rest are no picnic.
Ableism is the thing that ensures that practically nobody I meet considers me a real person. Not the way they are real people. It’s also the thing that ensures this even happens among communities that supposedly care about racism, sexism, classism, transphobia, homophobia, fatphobia, etc. (Never mind that ableism is actually a thread that ties every single one of those kinds of oppression together. They rarely notice that.)
And the absolute worst of it is being considered oversensitive while disabled people are out there dying in huge numbers due to ableism. While disabled people are being put into facilities just for them and this is considered okay, even though those facilities are linked to all sorts of problems including high mortality rates and crushing dehumanization that leads people to suicide. While disabled people are being abused and neglected in every possible way. While disability is used as an excuse to continue every form of oppression besides ableism as well, and people who are oppressed in other ways simply try to divorce themselves from disability rather than recognize what is happening.
But ableism doesn’t matter, because we are just oversensitive.
I am sick to death of being considered an add on to discussions of oppression. When ableism is the worst thing I face. The thing that has tried to kill me over and over, the thing that ensures that if someone murdered me in cold blood they could probably get away with it in any country anywhere (statistics are on my side), the thing where many parents of disabled children have tried to create laws allowing them to kill us against our will, the thing where when we are killed everyone sympathizes with the killers, the thing that ensures that I could be locked away in a facility against my will and nobody would give a crap because that’s just how things are, the thing that makes people consider me an empty shell who isn’t really there, the thing that makes people see my life as a half life that doesn’t matter as much as their lives, the thing that has resulted in my experience of every possible type of abuse, the thing that gets people like me still in mainstream scientific papers compared to nonhuman animals in a very pejorative way, the thing that makes honored professors argue that people like me shouldn’t qualify for full personhood legally or ethically, should I go on or is this enough?
Not to mention the thing that is used constantly to defend racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia, transphobia, classism, and every other form of bigotry and oppression. Every single one is tied in with ableism. Heavily. It’s interwoven through the depths of all of them.
The thing that makes people ignore all the above and call us oversensitive if we come up with a word for it.
